Which cat breed should i go for?
I have loved cats for as long as i can remember and would like to get one soon. However i have 6 different breeds that all appeal to me in different way, so i was wondering if anyone could help me with this. The six breeds are:
American Short hair
Scottish Fold
Russian Blue
Maine Coon
Norwegian Forest Cat
Ragdoll
The cat will be alone about 8 hours everyday due to i have to go to school and my parents to work. I would like the cat to be playful and affectionate. I live in a house with a small garden and plenty of space in the surrounding area for the cat to walk around if it likes. I would like minimal grooming like only 1 or 2 times every week. Which of the above cats do you think most goes with the description given.
Thanks in advance

As for the minimal grooming, rule out the Coon! The shorthair will require the least amount of grooming, along with the Russian Blue. Scottish Folds also come in shorthair. Ragdolls are probably the friendliest and have a lot of personality. You realize all these cats with the exception of the American Shorthair, are purbreeds and VERY expensive. I looked up every breed in my Cat Fancy magazine and all are available. All kinds of breeds are in my magazine. As far as being alone all day, most cats do just fine alone. Cats that go outside can’t be kept in by a fence like dogs, and you wanting a purebreed leaves it open to being stolen as it checks out the neighborhood. If you go to my profile and e-mail me,I’d be happy to give you some info on how to reach people for every breed you’ve listed and they can help you make the decision you’d be happiest with. Of course,a cat from a shelter can also be the best buddy in the world!!
First off, no breeder is going to sell you one of their pedigreed kittens if you intend to let it outdoors.
Secondly, do you realize that pedigreed cats START at about $600 and cats that are very popular – and not as common – such as the Scottish Fold START at about $1,000? Then add in the cost of spaying/neutering, shots, microchipping and you’ll be spending at least $900-$1,300 to get one of these.
Why not go to a shelter and ADOPT? And not a kitten – a cat. With kittens you can’t know their personality so whether it will be "playful and affectionate" is really unknown. With adult cats – the personality is right there before you. You’ll also only pay around $100 and get a cat that’s already altered, up to date on shots, deflead, dewormed, tested for disease and microchipped.
oh ragdolls are gorgeous
Don’t get a long hair cat if you don’t have time to comb 2-3 times a week. You might get away with the Ragdoll only needing combing 2 x a week. Go with shorthair.
The RB is a quiet cat and doesn’t mind being alone, as well as the ASH and Fold. The RB is the least grooming time of all of them.
However, if you are gone alot, either adopt an older cat (1 yr+) or two kittens to keep each other company. Keep in mind that if you are looking at purebreds (all the breeds) – prices start at $600+
Go to an Animal Shelter and bring home the cat that catches your heart.
So many cats are euthanized everyday in shelters because of irresponsible pet owners who don’t spay/neuter their cats.
I would get a short haired cat. Long haired cats get matted fur which is hard to deal with.

While i love Norwegian Forest Cats and Maine Coons I think it sounds like you’d rather have a shorthair due to the grooming. Russian Blue should be a nice choice. Very easy grooming.. They can be a bit shy to strangers but very loyal and loving to their family, though not so emotionally high-maintenance as the Oriental breeds. they can hang out on their own while you’re at school (most cats nap a lot anyway in the day) Theyre also playful clowns!
Or you could just visit a shelter, meet some cats , maybe you will happen to click with them.
But if you definitely want a pedigreed cat make sure you keep doing research on the breed and breeders. like here is a list of RB Breeders http://www.breedlist.com/breeders/rus.html
Also here is a list of 13 questions to ask a breeder. (it also goes into detail about what to look for in a breeder) http://www.breedlist.com/faq/breeder_questions.html
It won’t be cheap to get a well bred, well-socialised Russian Blue or any other pedigreed cat. probably between $500-800 for pet quality I. f you see someone selling in the paper or a website for $200 they probably are not really a purebred, or the parents were not judged to be breeding quality and they got them as pets and were supposed to have got them spayed & neutered, so they cant’ be registered, , or they have not spent money to get the health testing and vet care on the parents, the best food for the mother and kittens, etc. and probably did not seriously research to find the best mate.
Someone said American Shorthair is not a pedigreed cat , but they are thinking of ‘domestic shorthair’ .
Based on what you say a pair of Russian Blues would be your best bet. If you are out at work during they day and they will be left then you need two together so that they have company. Scottish Folds are banned in my country and many others for health reasons as the gene that causes the folded ear also causes osteochondrodisplasia- a condition like arthritis. They may be cute kittens but as they age they seize up. Ragdolls are very docile and make great housepets, but do require grooming.
