Should I get a ragdoll cat or any cats at all ?

July 16th, 2010

Hi there…..I need some advice. Iv had cats all my life growing up so know how to look after them well… my concern is that I live in a flat with my lil daughter and I would like to get a cat to keep her company. Iv studied up on which breed would be the best for me and came across a ragdoll cat as they have a good temperament and should not be let outside as they lack natural fighting skills. It feels a bit cruel to keep them indoors all the time. Could I let it out during summer or would it really not mind being a full time house cat ? Also should I get 2 cats to keep each other company ?….Thanks

Two ragdolls in a house would be the same as getting a couple of new throw pillows only more entertaining! They’re very laid back!

We have one and he’s pretty cool. We also have two others (tabbies) and they get along well.

Always remember that keeping a cat inside is less cruel than letting them go outside because we’ve domesticated their species to the point that they get into loads of trouble when put outdoors.

I agree with the answer above: NEVER let a ragdoll outside. They’re babies their whole lives and haven’t enough common sense to leave their indoor home. our Bink would probably fall over and die if he had to go outside and leave his kibble and bed…which is supposed to be OUR bed, but we forgot to tell him :)

I have rag doll, she is such a great cat! She’s so laid back and loving. She follows me all around, and will sleep in my bed too. I often wake up and she is curled up in my arm pit sleeping. If i move away from her – she moves closer, she likes to actually lie on you/very near you. She even sits on the edge of the bath while i have a bath. She loves nothing more then sitting on my lap and being stroked. She’ll just crawl up on your lap and go to sleep.
NEVER let a rag doll outside! They are INDOOR cats, it isn’t cruel. If you want them to be outside, they need to be on a leash. They have no common sense when it comes to being outside, they would get hit by a car – or stolen. I have one, and I’m glad i only got one actually. She isn’t lonely at all, because i play with her as do my other family members. She has what we call "a mad half hour" she will run around the living room crazily for half an hour, then just go back to sleep! Its entertaining to watch, she gains some speed lol! They are expensive cats, so keep that in mind.

They are GREAT cats, especially for a child. My kitten, Chloe, plays with my cousin who is 2. They are relaxed, have a great temperament but are still playful when you play with them. I love my kitten, i’m very glad i bought her. Even if she cost me £375! You should also look into what kind you’d like, as they have different ‘colour patterns’ so to speak.

    This is my kitten:

My parent’s have a ragdoll cat and he’s awesome but NO you can’t ever let him or her outside. They are bred for their disposition and have no natural defense mechanisms and will not be able to defend itself if for some reason a confrontation with another animal or cat happens. They love being indoors and actually would benefit with a brother or sister. They act like dogs almost and are a ton of fun to play with. Please don’t think its cruel to keep the cat inside it would be cruel to let it outside. I hope you make the right decision and enjoy your ragdoll or ragdolls if you decide to get one.
