My ragdoll cat fur is really knotted…?

I have a two year old Ragdoll male cat and his fur is just full of knotts to the point where you can’t even groom him. I am considering on having him shaved. If I shave him do you think when the fur comes back out it might be better ? I just don’t know really what to do any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Your Ragdoll can be shaved and his fur will grow in just fine. Or you can take him to a professional groomer. Your vet should be able to suggest a good groomer. And, some vets do offer grooming.

Whatever you decide to do, it’s time for you to learn about grooming and make sure he is brushed well at least once a week.

      Good Luck!

If the cat is beyond being able to brush out his fur, you can try using a detangling spray along with a special detangling comb/brush sold at pet stores, etc but chances are, it is too late for that. Unfortunately you may have to have him shaved. The fur should grow back just as long as before as the fur length is in it’s genetic makeup. It definately would be better than leaving the mats in of course. Be sure that once it has been shaved though, that you brush him out regularly to prevent him from rematting. Also, if possible, keep him out of water(tubs, sinks, etc) as when their fur gets wet and doesn’t get brushed out right away, it tends to mat up. I have 2 long hair cats that LOVE to lay in the tub and the sinks and I am always struggling with mats on them.
      Good luck to you!

I shaved the knots out, the fur grew back just fine. Brushing daily will help.

If this happened to my cat, I would take him to the groomer to get him shaved now. Then I would make an effort to brush him more often to prevent it from getting this bad again. If I had only been brushing once a week, then I would bump it up to every other day, or every day. If I had been forgetting to brush regularly, I would try to brush at least once a week, and more often if possible. I would also check into taking the cat to the groomers every month or so for a thorough combing out, or whenever I started to get overwhelmed. With our busy modern lives, it is not always easy to find the time or energy to devote to complete, thorough grooming for our pets – it is not crazy to admit that, and then take care of them by making use of a grooming service.

If you do it at least once a week, you can also catch those mats before they get really big and cause problems – and either comb them out or very carefully snip out the snarls.

I have a long haired cat, and I brush her every other day. She does not get mats, but sometimes she still sheds a lot. And she is such a spaz that she won’t sit still for me. So I take her to the groomer every six weeks or so. This has helped with the shedding problem, and helps me keep from being overwhelmed. I have found a groomer who is both really good with my cat, as well as really affordable. You may find that it would not cost as much as you think to take your cat in on a regular basis for a good combing-out. Call around, different places will have different rates.
